INTERVISTA A Manolo Peréz Ortega

"SPANISH BRASS" ARTIST

1971. In giovane età la fonte che alimenta questo musicista è la sua famiglia. All'età di 8 anni inizia gli studi musicali ufficiali nella sua città natale, Guadassuar (Valencia, Spagna). Successivamente ottiene il premio End of Studies al Conservatory of Music di Valencia e successivamente si trasferisce al National Conservatory of Versailles (Francia) ottenendo la medaglia d'oro alla Graduate Perfection. Dopo essere stato membro della National Youth Orchestra of Spain ha lavorato in varie formazioni di livello nazionale e internazionale. Ha insegnato in vari conservatori della Spagna e attualmente insegna presso la Horn Classroom (www.auladetrompa.com). Nel 1989, insieme ai suoi colleghi, creano lo Spanish Brass (www.spanishbrass.com), che ottiene il primo premio al Concorso Internazionale dei quintetti di ottoni di Narbonne (Francia) nel 1996. Da allora si dedica esclusivamente alla musica da camera , dando concerti e master class nei cinque continenti. È artista di Buffet Group e suona con Hans Hoyer Horns.

1971. At an early age the source that feeds this musician is his family. At the age of 8 he begins the official musical studies in his hometown, Guadassuar (Valencia, Spain). Then he gets the End of Studies Prize at Conservatory of Music in Valencia and later moves to the National Conservatory of Versailles Region (France) getting the Gold Medal at the Graduate Perfection. After being a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Spain has worked in various formations of national and international level. He has taught in various conservatories of the Spanish geography and currently teaches at the Horn Classroom (www.auladetrompa.com). In 1989, together with his colleagues, create the Spanish Brass (www.spanishbrass.com), who gets the first prize in the International Competition of Brass Quintets city of Narbonne (France) in 1996. Since then his dedication is exclusive of Chamber Music, giving concerts and master classes across five continents. He is artist of Buffet Group and plays with Hans Hoyer Horns.

A che età hai iniziato? E come è nata la passione per il corno?

Ho iniziato la musica a 8 anni e a 9 il corno

Qui a Valencia c'è molta tradizione nella banda e quando ero piccolo la banda della mia città, Guadassuar, aveva bisogno di corni, così il direttore decise che avrei suonato il corno.

Provieni da una famiglia di musicisti?

Sì, sono il quarto di cinque fratelli e siamo tutti musicisti.

Chi erano i cornisti che hanno influenzato la tua carriera come studente e come professionista?

Un sacco di persone vicine ma specialmente Daniel Bourgue; è stato la persona che mi ha influenzato musicalmente, pedagogicamente e soprattutto come persona

Il metodo di studio che consiglieresti a un giovane cornista?

Ognuno deve fare il proprio metodo di studio: il più importante è il suono, l'articolazione e, naturalmente, il controllo della respirazione.

Quanto è importante il riscaldamento e la tecnica quotidiana?

Devi differenziare tra studenti e professionisti. Durante il periodo di studi la tecnica quotidiana deve essere maggiore di quando si è professionisti.

Cosa consiglieresti per migliorare la respirazione? Usi accessori per migliorare la respirazione?

Chiederei ai suonatori di tuba o ai cantanti come respirano ...

I miei studenti usano gli accessori per avere un riferimento visivo ... La cosa più importante è che il lavoro di respirazione sia  fatto con lo strumento.

Quanto è importante avere una buona impostazione?

È essenziale avere un buon controllo della colonna d'aria, che è fondamentale per suonare bene.

Qual è il segreto per mantenere la qualità nel tempo?

Studiare ogni giorno come atleti d'élite.

Che consiglio daresti per affrontare una audizione?

Ho suonato il repertorio delle audizioni molte volte, fidati di te stesso e fai divertire le persone.

Qual è stato il tuo primo strumento?

Preferisci una marca di strumenti?

Hans Hoyer perché ha tutto ciò di cui ho bisogno. Mi sento a mio agio ed è uno strumento che ha molte qualità e benefici.

Utilizzi corni Tripli e Descant? O solocorno  doppio?

Quale è il tuo compositore preferito?

Bach, sempre

Quale Solo è stato importante nella tua carriera e quale è il tuo preferito?

Anni fa ho smesso di essere un musicista d'orchestra e ora sono il 20% Spanish Brass!

At what age did you start? And how was the passion for the horn born?

I started music at 8 and horn at 9.

Here in Valencia there is a lot of wind bands tradition and when I was a child the wind band of my town, Guadassuar, needed horns so the conductor decided that I’d play the horn.

Do you come from a family of musicians?

Yes, I am the fourth of five siblings and we all are musicians.

Who were the hornists that have influenced your career as a student and as a professional?

A lot of close people but specially Daniel Bourgue; he has been the person that have influenced me the most musically, pedagogically and above all as a person

The study method you would advise a young hornists?

Everyone has to do his own study method: the most important is sound, articulation and, of course, breathing control.

How important is warm-up and daily technique?

You have to differentiate between students and professionals. During the student period daily technique has to be larger than when you are professional.

What would you recommend to improve breathing? Do you use accessories to improve breathing?

I’d recommend asking tuba players or singers about how they breathe…

My students use accessories to have a visual reference... The most important is that the breathing work is done with the instrument.

How important is it to have a good embochure?

It’s essential to have a good control of the air column, which it’s basic to play well.

What is the secret to maintaining the quality and fitness right over time?

Practice everyday like elite athletes.

What advice do you give to prepare a good audition?

Have played audition repertoire many times, trust yourself and make people enjoy.

Which model of instrument do you play and which mouthpiece?

Hans Hoyer K10 and Vincent Bach 3

What was your first instrument?

Kruspe in Bflat

Do you prefer an instrument brand?

Hans Hoyer because it has everything I need. I feel comfortable and it’s an instrument that has many qualities and benefits.

Do you use Triple and Descant Horns? Or just double horn?

Hans Hoyer K10

Which Favorite Composer?

Bach, always

Which Solo was in your career important and which is your favorite?

Years ago I stopped being an orchestra musician and now I’m a 20% of Spanish Brass (chamber music): each concert is important, different and everyone is favorite.
