L'INTERVISTA
THE INTERVIEW

Yamaha semplice in Sib

Utilizzi corni Tripli e Descant? O solo doppio?

IN ENGLISH

At what age did you start? And how was the passion for the horn born?
I’ve started to play the horn when I was 10 years old.
At the beginning it was because of the wind band of my little village, there is a
big tradition in my region of playing wind instruments and they choose for me
the horn, it was not my choice.
My real passion to became a professional started quite late, actually when I
was around 18 years old.
Do you come from a family of musicians?
Only my brother played clarinet but not professionally, a part of it no one in
my ancestries was a musician.
Who were the hornists that have influenced your career as a student
and as a professional?
With no doubts, my professor Radovan Vlatkovic
The study method you would advise a young hornists ?
No one except to practice and listen what do you do and try to improve your
criteria in therms of knowing everything about the musical culture and
develop a sensibility for every form of art.
How important is warm-up and daily technique?
Very important, but not because a physical condition only, don’t forget about
mental warm-up!!!!
What would you recommend to improve breathing? Do you use
accessories to improve breathing?
To improve breathing I highly recommend to know your own body, how does
breathing work and to learn to control it while playing.
Acces to Pilates, yoga or other techniques will help a lot in that way of
achieveing conscience of the mechanism.
Accesories are useful but we should always connect what we do with them to
the fact of playing, otherwise we’ll get frustrated very quickly.
How important is it to have a good embochure ?
For me the most important thing is to have a good balance with the energy
we produce with the “air System” and the embouchure.
maybe a percentage of 60%-40%.
When embouchure is well balanced with air but not “ultra strong” sound is
allays better.
What is the secret to maintaining the quality and fitness right over time?
Learn how it works in the most natural way and keep doing the same thing
without eccentricities.
What advice do you give to prepare a good audition ?
The mental thing is the first we have to take care and then practising in the
best way possible and playing a lot in front of friends, colleagues, professors,
etc..
Which model of instrument do you play and which mouthpiece?
I play an Alexander 103 and a Yamaha 30 Mouthpiece (similar to Shilke)
What was your first instrument?
Yamaha simple in Sib
Do you prefer a instrument brand?
At the moment I like my horn but im always open to try other instruments.
I like also Paxman but I consider (also my colleagues) that because of my
way of playing, i sound better on my Alexander.
Do you use Triple and Descant Horns? Or just double horn?
I have an alexander 107X but I only use it for special high repertoire as
Haydn Symphonies or Zelenka Cappricios.
Which Favorite Composer?
Many! The one I’ll play next week! Just joking… Of course for horn players
the best is always Mahler, Brahms, Wagner, Strauss, and all the postromantic
generation.
Apart of being a horn player I like more and more Bach and Mozart.
Which Solo was in your career important and which is your favorite ?
My favourite solos are all the ones in the Mahler symphonies, specially 4,7
and 9.
The most important probably was the first I’ve played under the baton of
Claudio Abbado who make him trust in me , it was the finale of the Firebird of
Strawinsky
